Chronic Stress
12 Week Yoga Program for Chronic Stress
Nothing in particular is wrong. It is just that it has been like this for a long time, and somewhere along the way the ability to actually stop went missing. You sit down in the evening and your shoulders do not.
Our yoga teachers built this twelve week program on the protocol that lowered perceived stress significantly, and whose effects were still there three months after the classes ended. Twelve weeks, one long session a week, and short ones in between.
One longer session a week, short ones on other days, four sequences, twelve weeks. Twelve is the median length across this research and the length of both of the strongest trials.

Somewhere to Put the Day
A regular slot, and an ending long enough to matter.
Four weeks of gentle floor based practice with a long stillness at the end. Nothing here is demanding. The one instruction worth taking seriously is not cutting the ending: in the protocol with the clearest results every session finished with fifteen minutes lying down, and that is the part everyone treats as optional.

The Practice That Was Studied
Standing poses, back bends and long holds, which is what the research actually used.
Here is the counterintuitive part. The protocol with the clearest results was not a gentle one. It was standing poses, back bends, forward bends and inversions, held long, for ninety minutes once a week. And a separate trial found that restorative yoga did worse than plain stretching on cortisol, which is a good reason not to assume that softer means more calming. Four weeks of the real thing.

Something You Would Do Anyway
Get to a version you keep without a program telling you to.
One of the better findings in this research is that the effects were still large three months after the courses finished, with nobody being instructed to carry on. What decides whether that happens to you is whether the practice you end up with is one you would do unprompted on a Wednesday. So the last four weeks make it shorter without making it softer.

Why these poses and not others
The Chronic Stress practice guide explains what each pose does and why it belongs to this goal. It also carries the safety notes and every study this program is built on. Read it if you want the reasoning rather than the plan.
