Metabolic Syndrome
12 Week Yoga Program for Metabolic Syndrome
No single number is alarming. The waist has crept up, the blood pressure is borderline, the fasting glucose is a bit high and so are the triglycerides. Nobody has given you a diagnosis, and nobody has given you a plan either.
Our yoga teachers built this twelve week program on the trial where 45 percent of the yoga group no longer met the criteria for metabolic syndrome at the end, against 32 percent of the group changing their diet alone. Twelve weeks of active practice, alongside what you eat.
Four sequences, twelve weeks, four to five sessions a week. This is an active program rather than a gentle one, and that is a decision the research made rather than us.

Move · Weeks 1 to 4
Active From the Start
Get four sessions a week into the diary, with real work in them.
Four weeks of building the habit at a modest dose, but with the shape of the real thing already there. There is no gentle introductory phase here, because a study tested the gentle version directly against plain stretching and found no difference on six of seven metabolic markers. Effort is the mechanism, so it starts in week one.
Build · Weeks 5 to 9
Full Volume
Reach the dose the effective trials used, four or five times a week.
Five weeks at full volume. Twenty-five minutes of standing work in each session, in sets with rest between them rather than long single holds. This is the phase where waist circumference and blood pressure move in the trials, and it is meant to feel like exercise rather than like a wind down.
Integrate · Weeks 10 to 12
Past Week Twelve
Get to a version that carries on, because that is where the research goes.
Twelve weeks is where most of this research stops and it is enough to move waist circumference and blood pressure. The trial with the most striking result ran for a year, and 44 percent of that group no longer met the criteria at the end. That is the reason these three weeks are about shrinking the session to something you would keep doing without a program telling you to.

Why these poses and not others
The Metabolic Syndrome practice guide explains what each pose does and why it belongs to this goal. It also carries the safety notes and every study this program is built on. Read it if you want the reasoning rather than the plan.
