MS Fatigue and Movement
12 Week Adaptive Yoga Program for MS Fatigue
The fatigue is not tiredness and everyone who has tried to explain it knows how badly that word does. It arrives without having earned it, it does not answer to sleep, and it decides what the rest of the day contains. Heat makes it worse, and so does the exercise that is supposed to help.
Our yoga teachers built this twelve week program around fatigue rather than around balance, because that is the order the evidence actually runs in. Cool room, moderate pace, a chair for every standing position, and a ten minute version for the days when the full session is not going to happen.
Twice a week, plus a ten minute session whenever it is needed. Four sequences, twelve weeks. Twelve rather than eight, because every yoga trial in MS with a usable design ran twelve weeks or six months.

Move · Weeks 1 to 3
Three Weeks on Fatigue and Temperature
Get the heat under control and learn the breathing practice.
The first three weeks establish two habits that everything else depends on. One is keeping cool: a cool room, a moderate pace, breaks before you need them. The other is the humming breath, in the dose the trial used. Both are learned before anything demanding gets added.
Build · Weeks 4 to 8
Standing, With a Chair
Add supported leg work without spending the rest of the day.
The middle five weeks add standing positions, and the chair is the standard version of each of them rather than the modification. The aim is functional: getting out of a chair, staying upright, reaching. It is also the phase where honesty matters most, because the trials that measured balance and walking directly did not find a yoga specific advantage.
Integrate · Weeks 9 to 12
A Version That Carries On
Arrive at something short enough to survive a difficult month.
MS is not a twelve week problem. The last four weeks are about landing on twenty-five minutes you would still do in a bad month, with the ten minute version underneath it for the days that go badly. What continues matters more than what happened in the twelve weeks.

Why these poses and not others
The MS Fatigue and Movement practice guide explains what each pose does and why it belongs to this goal. It also carries the safety notes and every study this program is built on. Read it if you want the reasoning rather than the plan.
