Balance and Movement After Stroke
8 Week Adaptive Yoga Program for Balance After Stroke
Rehab ended and something was still missing. Standing up from a low chair takes a plan. Turning around in the kitchen takes a hand on the counter. You are steadier than you were and you are not steady, and there is nothing scheduled any more that is working on it.
Our yoga teachers built this eight week program on the dosage that the two most successful trials in this area used: twice a week, for eight weeks, starting entirely seated. Three weeks sitting, three weeks on the floor building strength, then two weeks standing with a chair in front of you.
Twice a week, plus ten minutes on a third day. Four sequences, eight weeks. Frequency matters more than length here: the two trials that ran twice a week found balance improvements and the one that ran once a week did not.

Move · Weeks 1 to 3
Three Weeks Seated
Build accurate movement where balance cannot be lost.
Everything in the first three weeks happens sitting, in a chair or on the floor. That is where the protocol in the strongest trial began too, with five seated breath-with-movement exercises before anything else. Weight shifting from one hip to the other, turning the trunk, moving the shoulder blades: all of it is balance work, done in a position you cannot fall out of.
Build · Weeks 4 to 6
Strength, Mostly Lying Down
Build the back, hip and leg strength that standing later depends on.
The middle three weeks add ten minutes of standing at a wall and then go to the floor for the rest. Back extension on your front and a hip lift on your back are the two positions in the documented protocol that build what standing up from a chair actually needs, and both are done with the floor already underneath you.
Integrate · Weeks 7 to 8
Standing, and the Sit to Stand
Put it into the movements that fill an ordinary day.
The last two weeks are twenty minutes standing with a chair in front of you, and they include the movement that matters more than anything else in this program: sitting down and standing up, five times, slowly. Balance confidence improved alongside balance in the trial data and fear of falling dropped, and both of those change what someone is willing to do in a week.

Why these poses and not others
The Balance and Movement After Stroke practice guide explains what each pose does and why it belongs to this goal. It also carries the safety notes and every study this program is built on. Read it if you want the reasoning rather than the plan.
