Building to Shoulderstand

Ninety minutes towards Salamba Sarvangasana

The theme of this class is self confidence, and the shape it builds towards is the shoulderstand. Balance work and mobilisation come first, then a long chain of backbends, and only at the very end the inversion itself. The intention runs through all of it. Stay strong and stay with it.

90 min · Level 2

Wann hilfreich

You feel small, or your staying power has run out. Give it the full ninety minutes. The whole point of this sequence is that the last pose is earned rather than attempted.

Energetic effect

The shoulderstand turns the usual direction of flow around and asks the body to hold that reversal calmly. Reaching it at the end of a long build is what makes the pose feel like confidence rather than exposure.

Physical effect

Standing balances strengthen the legs and improve coordination. The backbend chain from baby cobra through locust and bow into bridge prepares the shoulders and upper back for carrying weight in the inversion.

Mental effect

Self confidence is built the same way here as anywhere else. Through preparation you can feel, in a sequence that never asks for the hardest thing first.

Integration

The shoulderstand sits at the end of this sequence, not in the middle, and that placement carries the whole message of the class. Look at what comes before it. Baby cobra, locust, half bow, a pause in child's pose, then bridge. Five shapes that each open the front of the body and strengthen the back a little more than the one before. By the time the shoulderstand arrives, the shoulders have carried weight, the spine has extended repeatedly, and the neck has been asked to stay long throughout. The pose is not a leap. It is the last step of a staircase. This is worth noticing, because most of us treat confidence as something we either have on a given day or do not. The sequence suggests otherwise. Strength that lasts is assembled from smaller pieces, in an order that makes sense, with rest built in where it is needed. If the shoulderstand is not available today, the sequence still works. Stop at bridge, stay for a few long breaths and let that be the peak. The preparation was never the part you skip to get somewhere better.
