Strength and Functional Independence
8 Week Yoga Program for Strength and Independence
Nothing has gone wrong. You still do everything you did. It has just started to take a little more from you: the low sofa needs a plan, the shopping is heavier than it was, and getting up off the floor after playing with a grandchild has become an event.
Our yoga teachers built this eight week program around four movements rather than around poses: getting up, bending down, turning around and carrying something. Three times a week, at the exact dose that one trial ran against a conventional strength and stretching programme and matched it.
Three times a week for eight weeks. Four sequences. Eight weeks and three times a week is not a guess: it is the protocol of the trial that compared this kind of practice head to head with conventional strength training.

Why these poses and not others
The Strength and Functional Independence practice guide explains what each pose does and why it belongs to this goal. It also carries the safety notes and every study this program is built on. Read it if you want the reasoning rather than the plan.
