Balance Confidence and Steadiness
12 Week Yoga Program for Balance Confidence
Nothing has happened. You have not fallen. But you take the stairs differently now, you put a hand out on uneven ground, and you have started thinking about surfaces. Nobody has told you anything is wrong, and something has clearly changed.
Our yoga teachers built this twelve week program on the dose that produced measurable change in this research, and on the order that keeps it safe: four weeks with both feet on the floor before anything happens on one leg, and a wall under your fingers for four weeks after that.
Twice a week, plus ten minutes on a third day. Four sequences, twelve weeks. Twelve rather than six, because both clean trials in this area ran twelve weeks and nobody has studied six.

Four Weeks With Both Feet Down
Build the foundation balance actually runs on, before standing on one leg.
There is no single leg work in the first four weeks at all. What happens instead is foot work, heel raises and deliberate weight shifting: the three points under each foot, spreading the toes, moving your centre of gravity on purpose and feeling where it goes. Balance is largely a sensory problem before it is a strength problem, and the sensory part is where this starts.

One Leg, With a Wall
Introduce single leg standing with a hand on something, and build the strength under it.
Single leg work starts in week five and your fingertips stay on the wall for all four weeks of it. The rest of the session builds what makes standing on one leg possible: ninety second wide stances, eight slow sit to stands, and a lunge for the front of the hip. Strength first, confidence second, in that order.
Integrate · Weeks 9 to 12
Moving Between Positions
Work on the balance you use when something goes wrong, rather than the balance you can hold.
Holding still on one leg and catching yourself when you trip are different skills, and one of the explanations offered for the surprising fall result in the large trial is that long static holds may train the first without training the second. So the last four weeks are transitions: stepping, changing shape without resetting, taking the hand off the wall for a breath and putting it back.

Why these poses and not others
The Balance Confidence and Steadiness practice guide explains what each pose does and why it belongs to this goal. It also carries the safety notes and every study this program is built on. Read it if you want the reasoning rather than the plan.
