The research
What the studies actually found
This is one of the better replicated results in therapeutic yoga. Twelve trials with 864 people found fasting glucose down 23.7 mg/dl and HbA1c down 0.47 percentage points, and two larger analyses since have found 0.6 to 0.7. The most interesting one put yoga up against walking across 16 trials and 1,820 people and found yoga ahead on fasting glucose, post meal glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin. And the most detailed single trial documents its entire protocol pose by pose, with HbA1c falling from 8.17 to 6.95 percent in twelve weeks.

Does yoga lower blood sugar?
In people with diagnosed type 2 diabetes, yes, and it has been replicated. Three independent meta-analyses found HbA1c reductions between 0.47 and 0.73 percentage points against control groups, with fasting glucose down by around 24 to 32 mg/dl.
Is yoga as good as walking for diabetes?
Better, in the one review that tested both. Yoga lowered fasting glucose by 32 mg/dl against walking’s 12.4 and HbA1c by 0.73 percentage points against 0.35, and it also improved fasting insulin. That comparison is the reason this program looks the way it does.
What kind of yoga works for this?
The active kind. The protocols that changed the numbers were built from standing poses, prone back bends and twists, practised four or five times a week. Gentle restorative sessions on their own did not move glucose in any of these trials.
When is the best time to practise?
Whenever you will actually do it, with one bonus: about an hour after a main meal is when the effect on the post meal rise is most direct. There is a ten minute standing session in this program designed for exactly that slot.
What should I change if I have retinopathy?
Leave out inversions, including legs up the wall, and avoid holding your breath or any forced breathing technique. All of those raise pressure briefly, and fragile retinal vessels are the reason to avoid that. Everything else in this program stays.
What should I change if my feet have lost sensation?
Do every balance pose within reach of a wall or a chair, and look at your feet before and after a session. Reduced sensation makes balance harder in a way you cannot feel, and it means a small injury can go unnoticed.
