Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Baby Cobra has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Samana Vayu – The Balancing Force

Samana Vayu, the center of digestion and assimilation, makes its home in the navel area. In Ardha Bhujangasana, Samana Vayu is activated, which stimulates digestion and supports the body in absorbing nutrients better. This asana can help you find inner balance and gain clarity.

Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy

Udana Vayu, the energy center of the throat and head, is stimulated in Ardha Bhujangasana by lifting the head and chest. This pose can foster your ability to communicate clearly and express yourself.

Vyana Vayu – Expansion and Opening

Vyana Vayu, the energy that spreads throughout the entire body, is harmonized in Ardha Bhujangasana. The pose promotes the distribution of energy and blood through the body, contributing to overall vitality and mobility.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Baby Cobra

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Lie face down on the floor.
2Extend both legs behind you with the tops of the feet touching the floor.
3Place the palms next to the chest, fingers spread, and bend the elbows so that the forearms form a 90-degree angle to the floor.
4Press the tops of the feet, thighs and pubic bone firmly into the floor.
5On an inhalation, lift up using the strength of your back, trying to use the arms as little as possible.
6Keep the tops of the feet pressed firmly into the mat while only the upper body lifts.
7Roll the shoulders back and actively draw the upper arms toward the torso.
8Draw your shoulder blades back and down so that your sternum and collarbones point upward.
9Keep your legs and deeper glute muscles active without hardening them too much.
10Direct your gaze downward to keep the neck long, and avoid dropping the head back.
11Rise a little higher with each inhalation and lower the upper body slightly with each exhalation without setting it down.
12Hold the pose for about 10-20 breaths.
13Release the pose by returning to lying face down and rocking the pelvis from right to left to relax the muscles.
14Take a short break and then repeat Baby Cobra a second time.

Common Mistakes

A common mistake in this pose is that the strength does not really come from the back but from the arms.

Our Tip

Baby Cobra is especially suitable for people who complain of back pain and sit a lot at a desk. Performed dynamically, Baby Cobra works wonders and strengthens the back muscles.

Variations

There are various variations of Baby Cobra. One option is to take the hands off the floor and lift up using only the strength of the back. This builds strength and stability in the lower back and lets you move into the “high cobra” later on.

Physical Effect

Strengthening the Back Muscles

Ardha Bhujangasana strengthens the back muscles, especially the lower back and the lumbar spine. Through the gentle extension and activation of the muscles, stability in the back area is improved.

Chest Opening and Shoulder Mobility

The asana opens the chest and promotes shoulder mobility. Through the gentle stretch of the chest muscles and the activation of the shoulder joints, posture is improved and breathing capacity increased.

Abdominal Organs and Digestion

Ardha Bhujangasana exerts light pressure on the abdominal organs and promotes circulation in the abdominal area. This supports digestion and the function of organs such as the liver, stomach and intestines.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Self-Confidence

Ardha Bhujangasana can help develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and self-worth. By activating the Manipura Chakra, you are encouraged to believe in yourself and approach challenges with confidence.

Stress Relief

The asana helps release tension and calm the mind. Through the gentle stretch and breathing, stress is reduced and a feeling of inner peace is fostered.

Emotional Balance

Ardha Bhujangasana supports emotional balance by helping you let go of fears and worries and focus on your inner strength.
