Bow Pose

Category: Backbends

Backbends are asanas in which you gently stretch muscles and joints. They promote suppleness and mobility. Breathing in Backbends has a relaxing effect: you supply your muscles with oxygen and release tension.

Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Bow Pose has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Apana Vayu – The Grounding Force

In Dhanurasana, Apana Vayu is activated through the powerful opening of the lower body, while the abdominal area stays firmly in contact with the floor. This creates a grounding and stability that can help direct excess energy downward and thereby achieve a grounding effect on the entire body.

Samana Vayu – The Balancing Force

Through the intense stretch of the belly and the targeted activation of the solar plexus area, Samana Vayu is stimulated, which promotes digestion and metabolism. This pose concentrates the energy in the center of the body, which helps find inner balance while strengthening the digestive power.

Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness

The chest opening in Dhanurasana activates Prana Vayu, as the breathing space enlarges and the ribcage lifts. This pose fosters the vitality and refreshment of the entire body, as the lungs can breathe more deeply and the whole breathing process is enlivened. Prana Vayu thus stimulates the upward movement of energy, which clears the mind and increases the feeling of liveliness.

CHAKRAS

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

In Dhanurasana, the solar plexus is intensely stretched and activated, which addresses the Manipura Chakra in the abdominal area. This chakra is the center of our willpower, self-assurance and personal power. The pose fosters courage and inner fire by strengthening the abdominal area and activating the solar plexus. This activation can help intensify determination and self-confidence.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)

The deep chest opening in Dhanurasana addresses the Anahata Chakra, the heart chakra. This chakra stands for love, compassion and emotional balance. Through the conscious opening of the ribcage, a feeling of spaciousness and connectedness is fostered, releasing emotional blockages. This energetic opening supports the ability to both give and receive love and compassion.

Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra)

Since the neck is gently stretched in this pose, Dhanurasana also stimulates the Vishuddha Chakra, the throat chakra, which represents communication and self-expression. The extension in the upper back and the gentle pull on the neck help release blockages in the throat chakra and foster clarity of expression.

DOSHAS

Vata

Dhanurasana can increase the Vata dosha, as the pose requires intense movement and flexibility. This activation can boost mental alertness and creativity, but should be practiced carefully with a Vata excess to avoid an imbalance.

Pitta

Dhanurasana has a cooling effect on the Pitta dosha by opening the ribcage and deepening the breath without intensifying the inner heat. This pose helps calm the Pitta energy, contributing to a balanced and relaxed mood. It is well suited for fostering concentration while staying calm.

Kapha

Dhanurasana reduces the Kapha dosha, as it boosts the metabolism and energizes the body. The pose activates the muscles, strengthens the back and improves digestion, breaking down sluggishness and heaviness. This posture helps decrease excess Kapha and increase physical vitality.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Bow Pose

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Lie on your belly, chin on the mat, hands by the sides of your body.
2On the exhalation, bend the knees and bring the heels as close as possible to your buttocks. Keep the knees hip-width apart.
3On the inhalation, now lift the upper body and grip your outer ankles with both hands.
4Lift the heels toward the ceiling and draw the thighs away from the mat.
5At the same time, the head and chest lift.
6Keep your tailbone firmly on the floor while you pull yourself even higher with the heels and thighs.
7Kick your feet and shins back toward the wall behind you, thereby lifting your chest even more.
8Draw your shoulders away from your ears.
9Keep the back of your head long and direct your gaze slightly forward to the floor beneath you.
10Breathe calmly and hold the pose for 30 to 60 seconds.
11To release, exhale and slowly lower your body back to the mat.
12Turn your right cheek to the floor and relax the arms by your sides for a few breaths.
13Repeat the pose a second time, then rest with the left cheek on the mat.

Common Mistakes

Common mistakes to avoid are letting the legs splay apart and not directing the gaze to the floor, which means the back of the head is not long and the neck gets compressed.

Our Tip

Backbends tend to have a rather cooling effect and are ideal for Pitta/fiery people.

Physical Effect

Strengthening the Back Muscles

Dhanurasana strengthens the entire back musculature, especially the trapezius, the latissimus dorsi and the lumbar paravertebral muscles. This can help relieve tension in the back and foster an upright posture.

Stretching the Front Body Chain

Dhanurasana stretches the entire front of the body, including the chest muscles, the abdominal muscles and the hip flexors. This is especially helpful for yoginis who want to improve their flexibility or loosen the front body areas.

Stimulating the Internal Organs

Through the compression of the abdominal area in Dhanurasana, the internal organs, such as the liver, kidneys and digestive organs, are stimulated. This can support digestion and provide a gentle massage of the internal organs.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Self-Confidence

By strengthening the body and opening the heart, Dhanurasana can strengthen self-confidence. Example: The next time you face a challenge, think of the inner strength you develop in Bow Pose and dare to make bold decisions.

Stress Relief

The asana can help reduce stress by calming and focusing the mind. Example: When you feel overwhelmed in the middle of a hectic day, take a few minutes for Dhanurasana to calm your mind and focus on what matters.

Emotional Balance

Dhanurasana helps release emotional blockages in the body and restore emotional balance. Example: When you feel that your emotions are overwhelming or holding you back, practice Bow Pose to release them and give yourself clarity and calm.
