Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Warrior I has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Vyana Vayu – Expansion and Opening

In Virabhadrasana I, Vyana Vayu activates the distribution of energy throughout the entire body. This asana fosters the expansion of prana by ensuring that the life energy flows evenly through all limbs. Vyana Vayu ensures that the energy generated through the powerful posture circulates throughout the whole body, which leads to a feeling of wholeness and inner balance.

Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness

Virabhadrasana I encourages the opening and expansion of the ribcage, a central point for Prana Vayu. This asana supports the intake of life energy, helps enliven the mind and strengthens the heart. Imagine a yoga student who feels drained in the midst of an intense study period. Through the practice of this posture, she could feel a sense of vitality and enlivened energy.

Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy

The ascent of the arms and the gaze upward in Virabhadrasana I foster the activation of Udana Vayu. This asana supports self-confidence and the courage for self-expression. It would be especially useful for someone who faces an important presentation and is seeking support in unfolding their creative and communicative abilities.

CHAKRAS

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)

Through the opening of the ribcage in Virabhadrasana I, the heart chakra, the Anahata Chakra, is stimulated. It is located in the middle of the ribcage and connected with love, compassion and kindness. It fosters an attitude of openness and empathy.

Ajna Chakra (Brow Chakra)

The third eye or Ajna Chakra, located between the eyebrows, is connected with intuition and mental clarity. Through the concentration of the gaze forward in Virabhadrasana I, this chakra is stimulated.

Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)

Virabhadrasana I activates the Muladhara Chakra, located at the base of the spine. This chakra is the center for grounding, stability and safety. Through firming the legs and rooting the feet in the earth, the root chakra is strengthened, which conveys a feeling of safety and steadfastness.

DOSHAS

Vata

Virabhadrasana I can increase the Vata dosha, as the pose takes a dynamic and uplifting posture that stimulates the flow of energy and fosters mental alertness. This activation can lead to the airy and mobile qualities of Vata being stimulated, which leads to increased mental activity and creativity. However, this asana should be practiced with care with an already high Vata level.

Pitta

Virabhadrasana I can increase the Pitta dosha, as the pose requires strength, determination and energy, which stimulates the inner fire and discipline. This posture fosters concentration and goal orientation, which can strengthen the fiery qualities of Pitta.

Kapha

Virabhadrasana I reduces the Kapha dosha, as the pose fosters physical activity and energy, which helps break down sluggishness and heaviness. This asana activates the body and brings momentum into everyday life, which is especially beneficial for people with a dominant Kapha dosha when they feel lethargic or low on energy.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Warrior I

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Begin in Mountain Pose.
2Place your hands on the hips and, on the inhalation, step your right foot a big step back. Your feet should be hip-width apart to have more stability.
3Turn the back, right foot outward at a 45-degree angle so that the toes point slightly forward and the back heel is on the floor. Your left toes point straight forward.
4Place the hands on the hip bones, consciously draw the left hip back and push the right hip forward. Make sure that both hip bones are aligned parallel forward. Draw the pubic bone slightly up to avoid a hollow back.
5On the inhalation, bend your front leg until your knee has reached a 90-degree angle and is in line with the ankle. Rotate your front thigh outward so that your knee does not fall inward.
6Extend the arms parallel upward and lift your sternum. Actively extend the hands and fingertips toward the sky. Direct the gaze slightly upward and, with each inhalation, lift the ribcage even more out of the waist.
7Relax the shoulders, draw them away from the ears and keep the facial features soft.
8Press down through the outer edge of your back foot and keep the back leg extended. Hold Warrior I for up to 60 seconds.
9To release the posture, extend your front leg, place the hands on the hips and step back into Mountain Pose.
10Repeat the same on the other side.

Common Mistakes

Common mistakes in Warrior I are a front leg not bent deeply enough and a hollow back.

Our Tip

Warrior I embodies the connection of perfect stability and grounding through the feet in the root chakra as well as the heart opening through the upper body and the arms in the heart chakra. The elements earth and air are united here. Make sure to practice the pose with integrity and self-confidence.

Variations

There are variations of Warrior I. If you cannot get the back heel to the floor, you can practice the lunge with the heel raised. If your shoulders feel tight, keep the arms more than shoulder-width apart.

Physical Effect

Smiling Leg Strength

Virabhadrasana I is an incredible exercise for strengthening the leg musculature. With each deep breath, the thigh muscles fire up, while the gluteal musculature happily joins in. Even the deep-seated psoas gets a nice, beneficial stretch.

Joyful Joint Gymnastics

It fosters the joyful flexibility in the hip joints and lets the knees sing in movement. Each hip joint laughs in a different kind of movement, which leads to a healthy freedom of movement.

Laughing Spine

With each breath, the spine strives upward, strengthens the backbone and lets the inner strength shine.

Virabhadrasana I can help strengthen self-confidence and inner strength. The powerful posture of the asana can help overcome mental barriers and foster a feeling of inner power and determination.
