What is Karma Yoga? Just do it!

Was ist Karma Yoga? Just do it!

What is Karma Yoga? Just do it!

You hear it again and again. Whether in a yoga class or during yoga teacher training. But what is Karma Yoga? We uncover it! And actually it is quite simple: karma is the action, the simple act of doing.

In everything we do, we can practically practise Karma Yoga, consciously or unconsciously.

Karma, the action, actually dictates our life, since we are constantly doing and acting, we are always on a mission. Like the steps we take in life. One step after another, one action after another. This is how we set the karma wheel rolling, step by step.

Careful! Sometimes we can take a step in the wrong direction and then stray from our path! In the same way, our actions can throw our life out of balance and prevent us from reaching our goal: inner liberation, freedom!

But we are lucky! Just as our steps can find their way back to the right path, we can also correct our actions and learn from our mistakes, in order to bring our Karma back into balance.

Yes, indeed. Embedding an attitude of selflessness into everything we do is sincere and also demanding. It is not limited to certain times or places, but rather a continuous approach rooted in our everyday activities, relationships and decisions.

Whether it concerns professional obligations, interpersonal relationships, family responsibilities or personal interactions, Karma Yoga reminds us that every action is an opportunity to radiate love, devotion and positivity.

We serve from a place of compassion and selflessness, without expectations about the outcome. This does not mean that we ignore our own needs, but that we reconsider the motivation behind our actions.

When we manage this, our actions become easier. They cause no pressure, no bad conscience, no expectations, and therefore no disappointments.

Imagine you are in a dense forest, yet you barely notice anything around you. Your steps are hurried, your breath is heavy. You struggle and push yourself to your limits. But ask yourself: why this haste? Why this relentless pressure? Why are you even doing this?

Why do you strive for speed while you are in a place of such natural beauty? Why do you set such strict standards for yourself? Why are you running? Are you running for yourself and your health? Or are you running so you can record your performance on your fitness tracker as a personal triumph and proudly share it on social media? Perhaps you want to prove yourself, whether to yourself or to others. But pause and ask yourself: why are you really running?

In the moment you realise you are doing it for yourself, without hidden intentions, without the pressure, something magical happens. Your body loosens, the tension slowly fades. Perhaps a smile even flits across your face. You run effortlessly, breathe in the pure, cool forest air and perceive the beauty of nature around you in all its detail. The colours shine more intensely, the world around you becomes more vivid, as if you were discovering it for the very first time. And so you keep running, without shackles, without limits, just you and the forest, in harmony, in absolute enjoyment.

Karma Yoga is thus a conscious effort and brutally hard honesty towards our inner self. This honesty and admission helps us transcend our actions and turn them into a means of spiritual development and service. It calls on us to question our intentions, examine our actions and act in a way that benefits not only ourselves, but also others and the world around us.

Why do we "Om" after a yoga class? The meaning of Om explained

In today's fast-paced world, where competition, performance pressure, perfectionism and constant comparisons on social media set the tone, Karma Yoga can offer a remarkable refuge

Many virtues such as honesty, loyalty, devotion, consideration, selflessness, authenticity and so on struggle to find their place in this multifaceted world.

If we give no place to these virtues and do not act consciously and selflessly, and if every one of our actions is motivated by self-interest, or serves to make others happy, to please others or to always come first, then we drain our energy reserves so much that we break under the strain, also known as burnout.

Embedding Karma Yoga into everyday life requires a great deal of courage and honesty towards oneself.

Karma Yoga encourages us to carry out selfless actions without clinging to the results. In a modern context, this means performing our deeds with an open heart and the intention of doing good, without being fixated on personal gain or recognition. This can mean giving our best at work without seeking fame, or helping other people without expectations. It can also mean being aware of how our actions and decisions influence others and shape our environment.

Be honest with yourself, where do you often tend to go?

In a world that pushes us to be constantly successful and perfect, it is hard to let go of the ego and personal motivation. Often we act in order to receive praise or recognition, rather than out of pure selflessness.

The modern lifestyle often leaves little time for selfless action. Everything is driven by stress and we choose the fastest way to achieve praise and success, whether in career or in private life.

Time pressure and stress can make it difficult to focus on others and to serve them.

The constant overstimulation through technology and social media can make it hard for us to stay in the moment and act with genuine compassion.

The culture of constant comparison on social media can lead us to perform actions in order to impress others, rather than out of true selflessness.

The modern world often expects immediate results, which can make it difficult to focus on doing good in the long term without expecting instant rewards.

Despite these challenges, Karma Yoga can offer a refreshing liberation in our modern everyday life. When we strive to perform selfless actions and not cling to results, we free ourselves from the burden of the ego and constant self-centeredness. We experience inner freedom by releasing our actions from the chains of selfishness and the pressure to perform. Karma Yoga reminds us that true fulfillment does not come from outer recognition, but from the inner peace we reach through selfless deeds and compassion.

In a world that is often shaped by haste and self-focus, Karma Yoga can be a guide that reminds us that the true beauty of life lies in serving others and in letting go of results. It may be a challenge, but the liberation it brings is genuine, timeless and of inestimable value.
