Category: Twists
Twists are asanas in which you gently stretch muscles and joints. They promote suppleness and mobility. Breathing in Twists has a relaxing effect: you supply your muscles with oxygen and release tension.

VAYUS
Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Bharadvaja's Twist has its own unique effects on these vayus.
Apana Vayu – The Grounding Force
▼
In Bharadvajasana I, we sit firmly on one hip while the legs are folded to the side. This solid foundation stimulates Apana Vayu in the pelvic area, fostering elimination and grounding. Whenever you feel lost or overwhelmed, this pose can help center and ground you again.
Samana Vayu – The Balancing Force
▼
Through the twisting and opening of the abdominal area in Bharadvajasana I, Samana Vayu, the centering energy in the navel area, is emphasized. This movement fosters digestion and the inner integration of body and mind. Imagine mixing all the sweet and sour moments of your day and transforming them into a harmonious essence. With restlessness or digestive problems, this twist could restore balance.
Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy
▼
The twisting of the upper body and the opening of the throat stimulate Udana Vayu, the ascending energy. Bharadvajasana I fosters clear communication, self-expression and the connection to the higher self. If you are seeking guidance or are on a spiritual quest, this twist could amplify the voice of inner knowing.
CHAKRAS
Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra)
▼
Bharadvajasana I works on the Vishuddha Chakra, located in the throat area. This twist opens the chest and throat area and fosters the free movement of energy in the throat chakra, which stands for communication, expression and truth. The activation of this chakra supports you in expressing your thoughts clearly and authentically. Especially in times when you feel unable to find your voice or express yourself properly, Bharadvajasana I can help release blockages in the throat chakra.
Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)
▼
The twist in Bharadvajasana I gently opens the chest area, establishing a direct connection to the Anahata Chakra, the heart chakra. This chakra stands for love, compassion and harmony. Through the conscious opening of the heart, this asana can help release emotional blockages and foster a feeling of connectedness and openness. If you have difficulty showing compassion or forgiveness, the practice of this asana can help open your heart.
Ajna Chakra (Brow Chakra)
▼
In Bharadvajasana I, when you direct your gaze to the side or backward, the Ajna Chakra, also known as the third eye, is stimulated. This chakra is the center of intuition and mental clarity. The twist fosters mental clarity and inner insight, and you can sharpen your intuition. In moments when you have to make an important decision or want to strengthen your inner wisdom, this asana can help deepen access to your Ajna Chakra.

KOSHAS
Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)
▼
Annamaya Kosha represents the material body. Bharadvajasana I stretches the spine, massages the abdominal organs and fosters flexibility in the hips.
Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)
▼
Pranamaya Kosha embodies the flow of prana or life energy. Through the twist in Bharadvajasana I, the flow of energy in the body is improved, especially around the spine.
Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)
▼
Manomaya Kosha represents our fleeting mind. The pose helps center the mind and minimize distractions.
Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual Body)
▼
Vijnanamaya Kosha refers to intuition and wisdom. Through the depth of the twist in Bharadvajasana I, one can often experience greater insight and connection to one's inner knowing.
Anandamaya Kosha (Spiritual Body)
▼
Anandamaya Kosha represents our highest self and bliss. Bharadvajasana I opens the heart and fosters a feeling of joy and contentment.

DOSHAS
Vata
▼
The calming and grounding quality of Bharadvajasana I can offer relaxation to the restless Vata dosha. While the twist calms the flighty Vata mind, it is essential to assume the posture gently and mindfully so as not to disturb the delicate balance of this dosha.
Pitta
▼
Bharadvajasana I offers the ambitious and often overheated Pitta an opportunity to slow down and practice patience. The cooling effect of the twisted seated posture can encourage Pitta to choose a gentler and more conscious approach to asana practice.
Kapha
▼
Bharadvajasana I, a twisted seated posture, fosters movement and circulation in the body, which can help break through the often stagnant qualities of the Kapha dosha. The twist can also stimulate the digestive fire, which is especially useful for overcoming the sluggish digestion that Kapha types sometimes experience.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Common Mistakes
A common mistake is not making sure that the front hand is really placed with the palm facing down.
Our Tip
One tip is to imagine that you are turning entirely into yourself, and with each turn your mind becomes ever clearer and you cleanse yourself of mental and emotional ballast.
Variations
As an arm variation, you can also wrap your back arm all the way around the body, hold your hip or grip the inside of your thigh. Those who want to go further can also practice here in half lotus and with a bind.
Physical Effect
Back Revitalization
Bharadvajasana I is a gentle twist that mobilizes the entire spine, from the lumbar spine to the neck. This movement stimulates the spaces between the vertebrae and can release blockages along the spine. A regular practice of this pose can contribute to improved flexibility of the back and to relief of stiff and tense back muscles.
Organ Stimulation
The twist in Bharadvajasana I gently massages the internal organs, especially the liver and spleen on one side and the stomach and pancreas on the other. This gentle massage can foster digestion and support the detoxifying functions of the liver.
Relief of the Hip Joint
During the pose, the weight of the body is positioned mainly on one hip joint, which relieves and relaxes the other hip. This can be especially beneficial for people who suffer from hip pain or stiffness. The gentle stretching of the hip flexor and the outer hip area in this pose can also help release tension and increase hip mobility.
Effects on Psyche and Emotions
Deepening Awareness
Bharadvajasana 1, a twisting posture, allows you to look deep within. With each inhalation you can feel the space in the ribcage expand, and with each exhalation how the body relaxes further into the twist. This rhythmic dance fosters a deeper level of awareness and a state of introspection.
Releasing Old Patterns
Twists in yoga are known for releasing both physical and emotional tension. Bharadvajasana 1 offers the opportunity to release held emotions and old behavioral patterns stored in the spine and abdominal area.
Cultivating Patience
This posture requires patience and gentleness. It teaches you not to force the body but to lead it lovingly and carefully into the depth of the twist. This approach can affect emotional well-being by fostering tolerance and self-acceptance.
