Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Banana Pose has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Vyana Vayu – The Expanding Wave

Vyana Vayu, responsible for the distribution of energy throughout the entire body, is activated in Bananasana through the lateral stretch of the body. This pose promotes the flow of energy and blood through the entire body, supports the connection between the body parts and strengthens the feeling of spaciousness and expansion. Bananasana helps distribute energy harmoniously in the body and fosters a sense of wholeness.

Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness

Bananasana opens the chest and allows for deeper breathing, which activates Prana Vayu, the incoming life energy. This pose supports the intake of prana through the lungs and promotes the flow of energy in the chest area. The lateral stretch eases breathing and strengthens the life energy in the body, enlivening the energy system as a whole.

Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy

In Bananasana, Udana Vayu, the energy that rises in the throat and head area, is stimulated by the gentle stretch of the upper body. This pose helps promote the upward flow of energy and supports expression and growth. Bananasana can help direct energy toward the head and throat, fostering mental clarity and expressiveness.

CHAKRAS

Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)

The Muladhara Chakra, the root chakra, is located at the base of the spine and is the center of safety, stability and grounding. In Bananasana, the root chakra is activated through the stretch of the lower body and the gentle grounding of the pelvis. This asana helps foster a sense of safety and stability by strengthening the connection to the earth.

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

The Manipura Chakra, located in the solar plexus area, is the center of willpower, self-confidence and inner strength. Bananasana activates this chakra through the gentle stretch of the torso, which strengthens the inner fire (Agni) and fosters self-confidence. This pose can help activate your own inner power and strengthen self-confidence.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)

The Anahata Chakra, the heart chakra, lies in the center of the chest and is the center of love, compassion and emotional openness. In Bananasana, the heart chakra is activated through the lateral stretch of the chest, which deepens the breath and opens the heart space. This pose fosters emotional healing and supports the ability to feel love and compassion.

KOSHAS

Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)

This is the physical layer, our outer sheath. Bananasana works directly with the annamaya kosha by stretching the lateral muscles and fascia of the body and improving the flow of fluids and nutrients in the body.

Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)

This layer represents our breath and life energy (prana). Bananasana helps improve the pranamaya kosha by improving the flow of breath and releasing energy blockages. In everyday life this can be helpful for relieving stress and fostering a sense of vitality.

Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)

This layer represents our mind and emotions. Bananasana can help clear and calm the manomaya kosha by having a relaxing and soothing effect. In daily life this can be useful for easing emotional restlessness or mental strain.

Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual Body)

This layer is our inner knowledge and intuition. Through the practice of Bananasana we can dive deeper into this layer, calm the mind and strengthen our intuition. In practice this can be helpful when you have difficulty making decisions or trusting your inner wisdom.

Anandamaya Kosha (Spiritual Body)

Key Information for Correct Execution

Banana Pose

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Lie on your back in Corpse Pose and stretch your arms up overhead.
2Grip your left wrist.
3Move your feet and upper body to the right while keeping your buttocks and shoulders firmly on the floor. Create a beautiful arc like a banana.
4Make sure your hips are not twisted or lifting off the floor.
5The further you lean your feet and upper body to the right, the more intense the stretch on the left side of the body becomes. Breathe deeply into the lower belly and enjoy the opening of your left side.
6Hold the position for about 1-3 minutes. Then take a short break in the middle and feel the difference between the right and left sides of the body.
7Then switch to the other side and repeat the exercise.

Common Mistakes

Common mistakes in Bananasana are that the hips are not firmly anchored to the floor and the shoulder blades do not touch the floor. The shoulders are sometimes pulled toward the ears.

Our Tip

A tip for Bananasana is to imagine that you are creating a crescent moon or a banana on the floor. Breathe deeply into the lower belly and feel how the intercostal muscles stretch and how adhesions in the deeper tissue layers (fascia) slowly release.

Variations

There are various options for the arms in this pose. You can either hold the wrist, grip the opposite elbow, or rest one hand on the belly, which has a calming effect. You can also cross the outer foot over to intensify the stretch in the outer hip and the iliotibial band.

Physical Effect

Lateral Lengthening

Bananasana brings a gentle lateral extension of the entire body, which especially affects the lateral muscles and fascia of the body, including the latissimus dorsi and the intercostal muscles. This stretch can help release tension in these muscles and increase flexibility.

Improved Breath Flow

The lateral stretch in Bananasana also opens and stretches the lungs and ribs, which can lead to improved breathing. Through greater mobility of the ribs and a deeper expansion of the lungs, more oxygen can be taken into the body, leading to increased vitality and energy.

Spinal Health

This asana can also help promote the health of the spine. The lateral extension of the spine in Bananasana can help improve the flexibility of the spine and relieve the intervertebral discs. This can be especially beneficial for people who suffer from back problems or lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Gentle Calming

Bananasana helps calm the nervous system and fosters a sense of inner peace. This is especially beneficial for those who struggle with chronic stress or anxiety.

Sense of Openness

Through the lateral stretch of the body in Bananasana, feelings of restriction and limitation can be dissolved. This opening can help release emotional blockages and foster a sense of freedom and openness.

Renewal and Revitalization

The stretch and opening in Bananasana can help promote a fresh flow of energy in the body. This can lead to a feeling of renewal and revitalization, which can be especially helpful for people who feel drained or fatigued.
