Category: Side Bends
Side Bends are asanas in which you gently stretch muscles and joints. They promote suppleness and mobility. Breathing in Side Bends has a relaxing effect: you supply your muscles with oxygen and release tension.

VAYUS
Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Peaceful Warrior has its own unique effects on these vayus.
Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness
▼
Shanti Virabhadrasana stimulates Prana Vayu through the intense opening of the ribcage, especially through the backbend that stretches the heart forward and up. The pose challenges the chest muscles, stretches the heart space and allows for deeper breathing, so that more prana (life energy) can flow into the body. This posture releases blockages in the chest area and fosters the feeling of emotional openness and vitality. Practicing this pose helps open the heart for love and compassion and strengthen the life energy.
Vyana Vayu – Expansion and Opening
▼
In Shanti Virabhadrasana, Vyana Vayu is strongly activated through the wide expansion of the arms and the deep stretch of the flanks. While the back arm moves gently downward and the front arm draws up and back, the energy distributes evenly through the entire length of the body. This pose fosters the spreading of energy from the feet over the torso to the fingertips, which strengthens the feeling of expanse and wholeness. The stretch of the entire body harmonizes and integrates the movements, creating a deep feeling of balance and connectedness.
Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy
▼
In Shanti Virabhadrasana, Udana Vayu is activated through the upward-directed arm and the raised gaze. This pose draws the energy upward from the heart over the throat to the head and thereby fosters a powerful posture and clarity in self-expression. The asana opens the throat area and the ribcage, which supports the free flow of the ascending energy. This helps improve communication and foster creativity while you rest in this powerful and elevated pose.
CHAKRAS
Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)
▼
In Shanti Virabhadrasana, you feel how your feet root deeply into the floor, which activates the Muladhara Chakra at the base of your spine. This pose fosters a strong foundation and conveys a deep feeling of grounding and stability. The Muladhara Chakra, which stands for safety and rootedness, is strengthened through the firm anchoring of the feet in this posture.
Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)
▼
In Shanti Virabhadrasana, the Manipura Chakra in the solar plexus is activated by bringing the body into a powerful and upright posture. This pose challenges and strengthens the musculature in the abdominal and torso area, which strengthens the inner fire and willpower. While you hold the posture, you feel how the Manipura Chakra is activated and enlivens your inner strength and determination.
Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)
▼
The expansive chest opening in Shanti Virabhadrasana addresses the Anahata Chakra in the heart area. This pose allows you to open the heart wide while you stretch up into a backbend. The Anahata Chakra stands for love, compassion and the connection to all that is. Through this asana, you can release emotional blockages and open yourself to boundless love and compassion.

KOSHAS
Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)
▼
Annamaya Kosha represents our physical body. Shanti Virabhadrasana strengthens and stretches the leg musculature, opens the hips and the chest area and fosters the alignment of the upper body.
Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)
▼
Pranamaya Kosha comprises our life energy or prana. Shanti Virabhadrasana fosters the free flow of energy through the entire body, especially along the lateral energy channels.
Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)
▼
Manomaya Kosha represents the mind. The peaceful warrior fosters mental clarity, calm and focus. Holding this pose requires both physical and mental concentration.
Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual Body)
▼
Vijnanamaya Kosha concerns deeper insight and intuition. Shanti Virabhadrasana enables a deep listening within and a heightened awareness of your own body in space.
Anandamaya Kosha (Spiritual Body)
▼
Anandamaya Kosha is our innermost core, permeated by pure joy. Shanti Virabhadrasana, when practiced with awareness and devotion, can evoke a state of deep inner peace and bliss.

DOSHAS
Vata
▼
Although Shanti Virabhadrasana offers a certain grounding, the dynamic nature of the pose can increase the Vata dosha. The stable but nevertheless active posture fosters movement and flexibility, which stimulates the Vata energy.
Pitta
▼
Shanti Virabhadrasana can increase the Pitta dosha, as the pose requires an intense stretch and strength, which stimulates the inner heat and fire of Pitta. The expansive nature of this asana fosters the flow of energy and strengthens focus and determination.
Kapha
▼
Shanti Virabhadrasana, with its expansive posture and raised arms, activates body heat and increases the flow of energy, which reduces the Kapha dosha. This pose helps overcome the Kapha-typical sluggishness and heaviness by enlivening the body and setting the energy in motion.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Common Mistakes
Common mistakes in Shanti Virabhadrasana are a front leg not bent deeply enough and a missing external rotation of the front knee.
Our Tip
A tip for this posture is to hold the pose a little longer to feel the full effect. Shanti Virabhadrasana can also be practiced well in a flow sequence, for example together with Side Angle and Warrior II.
Variations
• Beginners can keep their back hand on the thigh. With advancing practice, the back hand can be moved down along the leg. • A deeper stretch is achieved by extending the front leg for a few breaths and moving into a variation of the side bend.
Physical Effect
Balance and Proprioception
Holding this pose on one leg improves balance and sharpens physical awareness, so-called proprioception. Training balance is crucial for preventing falls and injuries and can also help strengthen smaller, stabilizing muscles throughout the body. Consciously holding the pose additionally fosters the connection between body and mind, which can lead to improved movement coordination in everyday life.
Shoulder Opening
Raising and stretching the arms backward in this pose stretches and opens the front shoulder muscles and the chest area. This can counteract tension and stiffness caused by prolonged sitting or a forward-leaning posture and thereby contribute to an improved posture and breathing capacity.
Strengthening the Gluteal Muscle
Shanti Virabhadrasana, often called the peaceful warrior, emphasizes the strengthening of the gluteal muscle, especially the gluteus medius. By raising and extending one leg, the gluteal muscle is activated and strengthened. A strong gluteal musculature supports hip stabilization, which is especially important for walking, running and many everyday movements.
Effects on Psyche and Emotions
Reflection and Focus
With the gaze upward and the heart open, Shanti Virabhadrasana fosters a feeling of reflection and focus. It reminds us that no matter how chaotic life may be, there is always a calm core within.
Bravery with Gentleness
While warrior poses are often associated with strength and bravery, the Peaceful Warrior brings out a quality of gentleness and compassion.
Opening to Receive
Shanti Virabhadrasana requires a backbend and an opening of the heart toward the sky. This gesture can help you feel more receptive to life and its possibilities.
