Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Chaturanga Dandasana has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy

In Chaturanga Dandasana, lifting the body off the floor requires strong activation of the upper body muscles and the breath, which strengthens Udana Vayu. This energy helps maintain the posture, fosters concentration and strengthens the connection between head and heart.

Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness

The width and openness in the chest area, which is crucial for correct execution, activates Prana Vayu. This energy ensures deep, even breathing and fosters vitality and alertness. Prana Vayu helps make optimal use of the flow of breath and supply the body with energy.

Vyana Vayu – Expansion and Opening

The balance and stability required in Chaturanga Dandasana stimulate Vyana Vayu, which is responsible for the distribution of energy throughout the entire body. The even distribution of strength across arms, legs and core strengthens the connection and integration of all body parts, creating a feeling of wholeness.

CHAKRAS

Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)

Chaturanga Dandasana activates the Muladhara Chakra, as the position requires grounding and stability. The connection of the hands and feet with the earth fosters safety and trust. This energetic activation strengthens the foundation and gives a feeling of stability and firmness, both on a physical and an energetic level.

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

The strength from the core area, which is crucial in this pose, stimulates the Manipura Chakra in the region of the solar plexus. This chakra is the center of strength, self-confidence and determination. The pose demands discipline and willpower, which intensifies the energy of the Manipura Chakra and supports personal transformation.

Ajna Chakra (Brow Chakra)

Chaturanga Dandasana requires concentration and focus, which activates the Ajna Chakra between the eyebrows. This chakra is the center of intuition and mental clarity. The posture strengthens the ability to consciously stay in the moment and center the thoughts, which leads to a clear mind and inner alignment.

DOSHAS

Vata

Chaturanga Dandasana, the four-point support posture, can increase the Vata dosha, as the pose requires dynamic strength and precise control. It activates the entire body and demands a steady flow of energy and concentration, which addresses the airy and mobile nature of Vata. However, this asana can also lead to overstimulation in sensitive Vata, so a conscious flow of breath is important to maintain balance.

Pitta

The pose has an increasing effect on the Pitta dosha, as it fosters strength, focus and perseverance. The precision and effort required can address and intensify the inner fire and ambition of Pitta. Pitta-dominant people should take care to practice the pose with serenity to avoid an excessive drive to perform.

Kapha

Chaturanga Dandasana is ideal for reducing the Kapha dosha, as it activates the body, strengthens the muscles and stimulates the energy. The pose breaks through the sluggishness and stagnation often associated with Kapha and brings lightness and dynamism into body and mind. It is especially helpful for overcoming Kapha-typical heaviness and sluggishness.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Chaturanga Dandasana

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Start in Downward-Facing Dog.
2Inhale and shift the weight forward into the hands until the arms are perpendicular to the floor and the shoulders are directly over the wrists. Your gaze is directed toward the floor, the back of the head very long.
3Leave the hands where they are so they do not travel backward.
4Activate the whole body – full-body tension is called for here.
5Draw the shoulder blades apart and the back away from the ears.
6Draw the navel slightly in and up and activate your center.
7Press back through the heels; the toes and palms are actively rooted into the earth.
8Draw forward with the crown of the head while energetically drawing back with the tailbone. Become fully powerful and present.
9Do not forget to keep breathing deeply and fully.
10Take care to neutralize the neck and spine by looking at the floor in front of the hands.
11Hold the position for at least 10 breaths and then carefully lower the knees to the floor.
12Repeat the whole thing 4 times.

Common Mistakes

Common mistakes are the hands traveling backward, the palms not placed directly under the shoulders, the fingers too close together, the buttocks stretched too far up or sagging too much (mountain or banana).

Our Tip

Imagine a beam of energy running through your body like a laser, from the tailbone to the crown of the head – boom.

Variations

This is a very strong pose, especially for yoga beginners. As a variation I recommend starting on all fours and alternately lifting one leg and the opposite arm off the floor to strengthen your center and build strength in the back and arms.

Physical Effect

Building Strength

Chaturanga Dandasana, also known as the low push-up, especially challenges the muscles of the upper body. It strengthens the pectoralis major, the anterior deltoid and the triceps brachii of the arm. This strengthening of the upper body helps prevent injuries, especially in the shoulders, and can improve overall upper-body strength.

Stabilizing the Torso

When this asana is performed correctly, the core musculature, especially the rectus abdominis, the oblique abdominal muscles and the quadratus lumborum, is activated. This stabilization of the torso not only fosters better posture but can also counteract back problems, since a strong core supports and protects the spine.

Joint Integrity

Chaturanga Dandasana teaches how to hold the joints in a safe and stable position, especially in the area of the shoulders and elbows. The correct alignment and technique in this pose can help reduce the risk of injury in these joints and foster overall joint health. By learning to distribute the body weight evenly and activate the muscles around the joints, you can reduce the strain on the joints and strengthen the musculature.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Mental Resilience

Chaturanga Dandasana, often called the low plank, requires not only physical strength but also mental determination. This posture requires focus and discipline and thereby strengthens our mental endurance. It reminds us that overcoming obstacles often requires more mental strength than physical power.

Overcoming Fear

For many, this asana can be intimidating at first, as it holds the potential for the feeling of falling. Through repeated practice, however, you learn to develop trust in your own strength and abilities and to overcome the fear of falling or failing.

Presence in the Moment

Chaturanga Dandasana requires complete presence in the present moment, as you must be fully engaged physically and mentally to hold the posture effectively. This focus on the “now” can help calm the constant noise of the mind and establish a deeper connection with the self.
