VAYUS
Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Downward-Facing Dog has its own unique effects on these vayus.
Vyana Vayu – Expansion and Opening
▼
In Adho Mukha Svanasana, Vyana Vayu fosters the distribution of energy throughout the entire body. Through the active extension of arms and legs as well as the lengthening of the spine, prana is guided evenly to all body parts. The pose improves circulation and lymph flow, supports the nervous system and creates a feeling of wholeness and integration. If you want to improve the flow of energy throughout your entire body, Adho Mukha Svanasana helps harmonize Vyana Vayu and optimize the flow of energy.
Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy
▼
In Adho Mukha Svanasana, Udana Vayu is activated, the ascending energy that works in the throat and head area. Through the inverted posture and the lengthening of the spine, the energy flows from the lower body upward toward the head. This pose fosters mental clarity, concentration and clear expression. The stretch of the neck and shoulders makes it possible to release tension in this area, which supports the free flow of Udana Vayu.
Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness
▼
Adho Mukha Svanasana stimulates Prana Vayu, the energy in the chest area responsible for the intake of life energy. Through the opening of the ribcage and conscious breathing in this posture, the intake of prana (life energy) is maximized. The pose expands the lungs and improves the breathing capacity, which increases vitality and strengthens the cardiovascular system. If you want to increase your energy or deepen your breathing, Adho Mukha Svanasana supports the harmonization of Prana Vayu.
CHAKRAS
Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)
▼
The asana strengthens the root chakra by grounding the body and fostering the feeling of stability and safety.
Swadhisthana Chakra (Sacral Chakra)
▼
Through the gentle stretching of the hips and the lower back, the asana can activate the sacral chakra and increase life energy.
Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)
▼
The opening of the chest in this position can help activate the heart chakra and foster love and compassion.

KOSHAS
Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)
▼
The asana strengthens and stretches the entire body, fosters circulation and helps release tension.
Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)
▼
Through the improvement of breathing and oxygen intake, the flow of energy in the body is stimulated.
Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)
▼
Adho Mukha Svanasana helps calm the mind and reduce stress.
Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual Body)
▼
By inverting the head below the heart, the brain receives better blood flow, which can improve mental clarity and decision-making ability.
Anandamaya Kosha (Spiritual Body)
▼
The asana fosters the letting go of attachments and supports access to inner stillness and intuition.

DOSHAS
Vata
▼
Adho Mukha Svanasana has a neutralizing effect on the Vata dosha by fostering grounding and inner calm. The stable position with firm contact of hands and feet to the floor calms the often restless Vata mind. The even distribution of body weight and conscious breathing create a centered feeling of stability without significantly influencing the Vata dosha.
Pitta
▼
Adho Mukha Svanasana neutralizes the Pitta dosha by having a cooling and calming effect on body and mind. The pose makes it possible to dissipate excess heat and release tension in the shoulders and neck without intensifying the fiery nature of Pitta. Through the lengthening of the spine and deep breathing, serenity is fostered, which helps ease Pitta-related irritability and overheating.
Kapha
▼
Adho Mukha Svanasana reduces the Kapha dosha by mobilizing stagnant energy and stimulating the metabolism. The inverted posture fosters circulation and increases the heart rate, which helps reduce the typical Kapha heaviness and sluggishness. The pose strengthens the musculature, stretches the body and generates warmth, which breaks down excess Kapha.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.
Common Mistakes
Make sure that the hands are not placed too far forward, the feet are positioned hip-width and parallel, and the toes are in line with the heels.
Our Tip
The intention is to lengthen the spine. Therefore the focus is not, as many assume, on pressing the heels to the floor. It is important to build a solid and powerful connection to your palms and fingers, as they carry a large part of the body weight.
Variations
It is allowed to bend the legs. Using blocks under the hands can be helpful.
Physical Effect
Super Back
In Adho Mukha Svanasana, the entire back is strengthened and stretched. The posture activates the erector spinae and the quadratus lumborum, which contributes to an improved posture.
Leg Magic
The Downward Facing Dog pose stretches the hamstrings and the calf muscles, while at the same time strengthening the hip musculature such as the gluteus maximus and the tensor fasciae latae. You will notice that your legs and hips become more supple and flexible – perfect for anyone who wants to loosen up again after long study sessions or intense workouts.
Inner Wonders
Adho Mukha Svanasana stimulates circulation in the head and chest area, which improves the function of the thyroid, parathyroid and thymus gland. This leads to a better hormone balance and a strengthened immune system.
