Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Chair Pose has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Apana Vayu – The Grounding Force

Utkatasana activates Apana Vayu, the downward-directed energy anchored in the lower body area. As you go deep into the knees, you will feel the connection to the earth and feel grounded. This posture fosters stability and grounds the mind.

Samana Vayu – The Balancing Force

The demand to hold the balance in Utkatasana activates Samana Vayu, the centering energy in the navel region. This asana fosters the sense of balance and strengthens the center of the body. It also helps distribute energy effectively throughout the entire body.

Udana Vayu – The Ascending Energy

Utkatasana, with its emphasis on uprightness and posture, stimulates Udana Vayu, the energy that ascends from the throat to the head. This asana fosters the feeling of elevation and expansion. It also encourages conscious breathing and improves the circulation in the head area.

CHAKRAS

Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)

As you settle down in Utkatasana, you feel the strong foundation that you share with the earth. The Muladhara Chakra, located at the base of your spine, represents this deep connection, stability and the feeling of safety.

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Utkatasana requires a deep activation of your core musculature, which addresses the Manipura Chakra in the navel area. This center of energy, drive and self-confidence lights up when you activate your inner strength.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)

Through the lifting of the ribcage and the opening of the heart in Utkatasana, you connect with the Anahata Chakra in the heart area. Here the gates of love, compassion and connection open.

KOSHAS

Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)

Annamaya Kosha is the outer layer, our physical sheath. In Utkatasana it strengthens and invigorates above all the thighs, calves and the back of the body. The pose improves posture and strengthens the leg and gluteal musculature.

Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)

Pranamaya Kosha is the sheath of life energy. Utkatasana activates the flow of prana, especially in the area of the lower torso and the pelvis, which leads to a feeling of renewal and vitality.

Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)

Manomaya Kosha refers to our mental and emotional state. Utkatasana demands mental endurance and concentration. Holding the pose helps focus the mind and distracts from scattered thoughts.

Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual Body)

Vijnanamaya Kosha stands for intuition and wisdom. Through the conscious practice of Utkatasana, by paying attention to the exact alignment and the connection of movement and breath, one can develop a deeper understanding of one's own body.

Anandamaya Kosha (Spiritual Body)

Anandamaya Kosha represents our deepest level of being, the state of joy and bliss. Although Utkatasana is physically challenging, overcoming this challenge and immersing yourself in the pose can bring a feeling of deep contentment and joy.

DOSHAS

Vata

Utkatasana helps calm the flighty Vata dosha by offering grounding and steadiness. The effort in this pose, combined with the firm connection to the feet on the floor, can help reduce Vata-typical restlessness and scatteredness.

Pitta

Although Utkatasana is demanding, it fosters serenity and self-discipline without intensifying the intense heat of Pitta. The pose helps channel the fiery energy of the Pitta dosha without fostering ambition or the urge to overwork.

Kapha

Utkatasana fosters stability and grounding, which increases the Kapha dosha. This pose requires endurance and builds strength in the legs and the torso, which supports the Kapha type in strengthening their natural firmness and endurance.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Chair Pose

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Begin standing with feet hip-width apart.
2Bend the knees and lower the hips as if you were sitting down on a chair.
3Extend the arms straight up, shoulders relaxed, palms facing each other.
4Make sure that your knees do not extend beyond the toes.
5Keep the back straight and the chest directed forward.
6Linger in this pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Common Mistakes

• Bending the knees too much, whereby they extend beyond the toes. • Rounding of the back instead of a straight spine.

Our Tip

Make sure you breathe deeply and evenly during the posture. Imagine how you build strength with each inhalation and release tension with each exhalation. Keep the gaze directed straight ahead to foster concentration.

Variations

• For beginners, the posture can be practiced with the back against a wall to support the balance. • Advanced practitioners can cross the arms over the head or hold the hands in Anjali Mudra (prayer position) in front of the chest.

Physical Effect

Strengthening the Leg Musculature

Utkatasana requires a deep squat that intensely engages the quadriceps, gluteal muscles and calves. This powerful engaging and holding strengthens the musculature of the lower extremities. A stronger leg musculature supports the joint stability, especially in the knee and hip area, and thus prevents injury-prone areas.

Activation and Strengthening of the Core

Holding Utkatasana requires not only strong legs but also an active core musculature. The abdominal musculature, especially the deep abdominal muscles such as the transversus abdominis, must contract to keep the upper body upright and support the spine. This not only supports a good posture but can also counteract future back problems.

Stimulation of the Digestive System

The slight compression in the abdominal area during Utkatasana stimulates the abdominal organs, including the digestive tract. This can increase the circulation in this area and improve the digestive function. For people who struggle with digestive problems or sluggishness in the bowel area, the regular practice of this posture can help foster the bowel motility in a natural way.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Concentration Boost

Utkatasana requires a deep physical effort that helps center the mind. When you concentrate on holding the pose, distracting thoughts can subside, which leads to a sharper awareness.

Self-Confidence

Holding such a powerful pose as Utkatasana can strengthen self-confidence.

Grounding and Letting Go

Utkatasana, deeply rooted in the earth, can help let go of fears and insecurities. The profound immersion in the pose can help release emotional blockages stored in the lower body.
