Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Pose of the Sage Marichi A has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Apana Vayu – The Grounding Force

Marichyasana A, with the grounded seat and the leg pressed firmly against the floor, strengthens and stimulates Apana Vayu in the lower pelvic area. This asana helps us center and anchor ourselves. For those seeking stability in the midst of the storm, this could be the perfect pose to reconnect with the earth and its firm embrace.

Samana Vayu – The Balancing Force

The twist in Marichyasana A, especially around the navel, emphasizes Samana Vayu. This asana helps with digestion and the balancing of energy by stimulating the middle part of the body. For those who have difficulty finding their way in the chaos of life, this gentle twist could help restore the inner balance and bring everything back to the center.

Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness

As we twist in Marichyasana A, we open and expand the ribcage, which stimulates Prana Vayu, the ascending energy. This stimulates the breathing and fosters a feeling of expansion and renewal in the heart area. For those who feel constricted or restricted, this twist can help open the heart and let in fresh energy and inspiration.

CHAKRAS

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Marichyasana A intensely activates the Manipura Chakra in the area of the solar plexus. Through the forward bend and the involvement of the bent leg, the solar plexus is stimulated, which fosters inner strength and determination. This activation helps strengthen self-confidence and willpower by addressing the center of energy and self-awareness.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)

The pose exerts pressure on the chest area, which activates the Anahata Chakra in the heart. This gentle compression makes it possible to release emotional tension and fosters a feeling of openness and compassion. The chest area is stretched in the process, which supports a connection to the emotions and the ability to feel love and forgiveness.

Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra)

Through the twisting of the upper body and the opening of the throat, Marichyasana A stimulates the Vishuddha Chakra, the throat chakra. This activation fosters clear communication and helps find inner clarity. By opening the throat area, the pose supports the ability to express thoughts and feelings authentically and unfold creative impulses.

DOSHAS

Vata

Marichyasana A brings stability into the body through the grounding of the seat and the even breathing, which calms the restless Vata dosha. The asana fosters a calm, even breath and helps break down nervousness and stress that are often connected with an unbalanced Vata. It has a grounding effect and fosters inner calm.

Pitta

Marichyasana A also balances the Pitta dosha by moderating the heat and intensity connected with Pitta through the cooling and inward-directed nature of the pose. The forward bend fosters a feeling of letting go, patience and self-control, which harmonizes the overheated Pitta.

Kapha

Marichyasana A helps balance the Kapha dosha by easing the sluggishness through the activation of the abdominal organs and the fostering of digestion. The gentle twist in combination with the forward bend has an enlivening effect, which reduces the Kapha-typical heaviness. It brings light movement and energy into the body and can set stagnant Kapha energies into flow.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Pose of the Sage Marichi A

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1Starting position: Begin in Dandasana (staff pose), in which you sit on the floor with extended legs.
2Positioning the right leg: Bend the right knee and draw the right foot close to the right buttock so that the foot stands on the floor and the knee points upward.
3Alignment of the left leg: Keep the left leg extended and activate the foot by drawing the toes upward (dorsiflexion).
4Extension of the spine: Breathe in and stretch your spine to reach an upright posture.
5Forward bend of the upper body: On the exhalation, bend forward, leading your right shoulder past the inner side of the right knee.
6Bind: Wrap your right arm around the right knee and try to grip your hands or fingers behind your back.
7Deeper stretch: Breathe in deeply to lengthen the spine, and breathe out to come deeper into the forward bend. Keep the gaze softly directed forward.
8Holding the position: Linger for a few breaths in this position, trying with each exhalation to come a little deeper into the forward bend.
9Releasing the posture: Release the bind and straighten up again with an inhalation. Extend the right leg and return to Dandasana.
10Repetition on the other side: Perform the same steps on the left side.

Our Tip

Visualize how with each inhalation you bring length into your spine and with each exhalation you come deeper into the forward bend, while at the same time maintaining inner calm and concentration.

Physical Effect

Digestion Boost

Marichyasana A, known as the pose of the sage Marichi, exerts a gentle pressure on the abdominal organs through the deep forward bend and the embrace of the leg. This pressure can stimulate the peristalsis, which supports the digestive function and can foster the elimination of toxins through the stimulation of the internal organs such as the stomach and the intestines.

Lumbar Spine Stretch

The intense bend in Marichyasana A leads to an extension of the lumbar spine, which leads to a stretch of the lumbar musculature and a relief of the intervertebral discs in the lower back area. This action can improve the mobility of the lumbar spine and ease tension in this area, which is beneficial for people with sedentary work or back pain.

Hip Opener

The posture of the bound leg in Marichyasana A fosters the stretch of the hip flexors and the inner thigh musculature, which can lead to an improved hip flexibility. This stretch can also affect the fascial connections in the area of the hips and thus contribute to the relief of hip stiffness and the fostering of a healthy hip mobility.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Self-Awareness

Marichyasana A is an asana that fosters deep self-awareness. The intense forward bend with an embrace of the leg invites an introspective journey in which one explores one's own limits and potentials.

Emotional Depth

The bound posture in Marichyasana A creates a protected space that makes it possible to venture safely and securely into the depths of one's own emotions. This can lead to an intensified emotional processing and a better understanding of one's own inner life.

Mental Cleansing

Marichyasana A supports a mental cleansing, as the intense forward bend enables a withdrawal from external distractions and directs the concentration inward.
