Vayus
Life Energy

VAYUS

Each of the five Prana Vayus plays an essential role in our body and mind. They move and direct energy in specific directions, each with its own special area of influence and function. Seated Forward Bend has its own unique effects on these vayus.

Apana Vayu – The Grounding Force

This downward-directed energy sits in the legs and helps us stay grounded. In Paschimottanasana we feel how the feet press firmly into the earth, as if we were chatting with Mother Nature. Apana Vayu helps us strengthen and stabilize the legs. Practice this asana when you feel scattered; it will reconnect you with the earth!

Samana Vayu – The Balancing Force

Located in the stomach area, Samana Vayu balances our inner energy. Paschimottanasana draws you back into your center, like a good friend who reminds you of the balance in your life. If you feel indecisive or confused, practice this pose to find clarity and balance.

Prana Vayu – Expansion of Consciousness

Located in the chest area, Prana Vayu draws energy inward and upward. In Paschimottanasana it helps open the heart and deepen the breathing, as if you were breathing in a fresh breeze of joy for life. With feelings of dejection or sadness, this pose can enliven and renew you.

CHAKRAS

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Paschimottanasana has a deep effect on the Manipura Chakra, located in the area of the solar plexus. This asana activates the inner fire and the willpower by gently compressing and stretching the abdominal area. Through the forward bend, the solar plexus is stimulated, which can lead to a strengthened self-confidence, more self-discipline and a feeling of inner strength. This can help strengthen self-confidence and pursue personal goals with determination.

Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)

Paschimottanasana activates and strengthens the Muladhara Chakra, located at the base of the spine. This asana grounds the body and fosters a deep feeling of stability and safety. Through bending the upper body forward and the connection with the floor, this pose helps stimulate the root chakra, which strengthens the feeling of being rooted and inner safety. This can be especially helpful for reducing fears and insecurities.

Swadhisthana Chakra (Sacral Chakra)

Paschimottanasana also addresses the Swadhisthana Chakra, located in the lower abdominal and pelvic area. This forward bend stretches the lower vertebrae and the hip area, which helps release blockages in the sacral chakra. This fosters the fluidity of the emotional and creative energy and supports the ability to come into harmony with the natural rhythms of life. The asana helps foster creativity and reach emotional balance.

DOSHAS

Vata

Paschimottanasana has a strongly grounding and stabilizing effect on the Vata dosha. The forward bend fosters a deep connection with the floor and helps calm the restless mind and ease nervousness. Vata-dominant people benefit from this asana, as it soothes the flighty, airy Vata and fosters a feeling of safety and inner peace.

Pitta

Paschimottanasana is an excellent asana for reducing the Pitta dosha. The cooling, calming nature of the forward bend helps break down excess heat in the body and calm the mind. The gentle stretch and the inward-directed movement foster relaxation and reduce irritability and aggression, which often accompany an increased Pitta dosha. This asana helps soothe the inner fire of Pitta and fosters a state of serenity.

Kapha

Paschimottanasana supports the Kapha dosha by strengthening the natural qualities of Kapha: stability, calm and grounding. This asana fosters a deep feeling of relaxation and strengthens the connection to the earth, which further nourishes Kapha. Through the slow and mindful practice of this pose, the Kapha dosha can be strengthened, whereby a feeling of safety and steadiness in body and mind arises.

Key Information for Correct Execution

Seated Forward Bend

Meet Geraldine, a certified yoga teacher and psychology student who emphasizes mindfulness and alignment to inspire people toward a more peaceful life.

1First sit on the floor with extended legs in the staff pose.
2If you tend to round in the back, you can sit on the edge of a folded blanket.
3Reach under your buttocks and draw the flesh of the buttocks to the side so that both sitting bones rest stably on the floor.
4Flex both feet and activate the thigh musculature.
5Place the fingertips next to you on the floor and, on the inhalation, lengthen the spine.
6Breathe out and move forward with the hands toward your feet.
7Keep the spine long, the chest open and the shoulders drawn down and back. The gaze is directed slightly forward toward the floor.
8Concentrate more on maintaining the length of your spine rather than concentrating on going deeper into the forward bend.
9Relax your facial features and breathe deeply into the lower belly.
10Grip your foot, your ankle or the part of your leg that you can reach with your hands.
11Hold the pose for at least 1 minute or longer.
12To release the posture, straighten back up with the inhalation and a long back.

Common Mistakes

Common mistakes in this posture are bending forward with a rounded back and a non-extended upper body. Make sure to maintain an upright spine throughout the entire posture.

Our Tip

A tip is to hold the posture for a longer time to achieve a calming effect on the mind. Paschimottanasana is ideal before going to sleep to calm the nervous system. Hold the pose for at least 1-3 minutes to feel its full effect.

Variations

• Work with a strap over the balls of the feet to make reaching the feet easier. • With knee pain, you can place a rolled blanket under the extended legs. • An advanced variation is placing one or two blocks in front of the feet to create a counterpressure and enable a more intense stretch.

Physical Effect

Digestion Promoter

The forward bend and the compression of the abdominal area in Paschimottanasana massage the internal organs, including stomach and intestines. This gentle massage stimulates digestion and helps ease constipation and bloating. It is like a loving embrace for our digestive system that nourishes us from within.

Heart & Lungs

This asana fosters not only flexibility in the upper back and in the shoulders but also opens the ribcage, which enables an improved breathing. The intercostal musculature is stretched, whereby the lungs have more space to expand. This leads to a better oxygen supply of the heart and the entire body.

Flexible Strength

Paschimottanasana, the intense forward bend, has a strengthening and stretching effect on the leg musculature, especially quadriceps, thighs and calf muscles. Through the extension of the upper body and the simultaneous activation of the back musculature, the spine is stabilized and at the same time flexibility is fostered. This duality creates a harmony of strength and suppleness in the body.

Effects on Psyche and Emotions

Self-Reflection & Insight

The inner alignment and concentration required in Paschimottanasana foster self-reflection and self-knowledge. It offers a space to pause and observe our mind and our thoughts.

Grounding & Centering

This posture creates a connection to the earth and helps us feel grounded and centered. This state of balance fosters a feeling of stability and calm.

Heart Opening

Paschimottanasana challenges us to open our heart and our soul. This deep forward bend teaches us humility and acceptance and helps break down emotional barriers.
